Giving Frequently Asked Questions
Supporting the Ventura County Library Foundation through a planned gift is a meaningful way to ensure Ventura County Libraries remain strong for future generations. The easiest way to make a planned gift is to name the Ventura County Library Foundation in your will.
What are the types of planned gifts to the Ventura County Library Foundation?
Generous supporters have made gifts ranging from a few hundred dollars to more than $2 million. You can leave a gift for the Ventura County Library Foundation through your will or living trust, or you can designate a portion of your retirement account, life insurance policy, Individual Retirement Account (IRA), or Donor-Advised Fund (DAF). There are many flexible and tax-efficient ways to support the Ventura County Library Foundation.
Why do I make my gift through the Ventura County Library Foundation?
The Ventura County Library Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors and citizens. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization designated to receive bequests and other planned gifts for the Ventura County Library System that align with the Foundation’s mission and gift policy. By naming the Ventura County Library Foundation as a beneficiary, you can create a lasting legacy for the library system, and, in some instances, you may also receive tax benefits.
How will my gift be used?
Your gift will expand and enhance library services beyond what public funding alone can provide. The Ventura County Library Foundation works closely with librarians to determine where funding can expand and enhance the Ventura County Library System’s work, helping our libraries offer books and programs that might not otherwise be possible. In the past, planned gifts to the Ventura County Library Foundation have funded programs, collections, mobile libraries, facilities improvements, and more. Gifts to the Ventura County Library Foundation provide program enhancements and do not fund day-to-day library operations, which are funded by tax dollars.
Should I designate a specific use?
A planned gift is a powerful way to shape the future of learning, literacy, and opportunity in Ventura County. Because needs will change over time, some donors choose to leave an unrestricted gift, giving the libraries the flexibility to respond to new challenges, technological advances, and community priorities.
A gift to the Ventura County Library Foundation can also be made in honor of a special person you would like to recognize. Please ask us for details.
What happens if I don’t have a will?
Without a will, your assets will be distributed according to state law. Estate planning empowers you to guide your giving.
Who makes decisions about my gift in the future?
The Ventura County Library Foundation partners with the Ventura County Library System to ensure every gift makes a meaningful impact. Guided by a dedicated Board of Directors, the Foundation collaborates with our librarians to identify priority needs and direct donor support where it will have the most long-term benefit.
Through careful planning and strong collaboration, donor contributions strengthen library programs, expand opportunities, and enrich the entire Ventura County community.
May I remain anonymous?
Of course! Any gift to the Ventura County Library Foundation can remain anonymous to the public. Just let us know your wishes. We take the utmost care to honor your gift as you intend.
Are donations tax-deductible, and will I receive a written acknowledgement?
Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. All donations receive written acknowledgement consistent with IRS regulations.
